3 Apartheid

Author : Michael Morris
Genre : Politics & Current Events Books History
Price : $7.99
Release Date : 2012-02-23
Description : The one thing that looms largest in South Africa’s future is South Africa’s past – most especially the nearly five decades of division and conflict at the heart of one of the twentieth century’s most infamous social experiments.

Apartheid, An Illustrated History is a portrait of the defining experience of modern South Africa’s transition from colonial state to democracy. What began in May 1948 as a vague, grimly ambitious project to interrupt history and engineer white supremacy at the expense of the country’s black majority spawned forty-six years of repressive authoritarianism and bitter resistance which claimed the lives of thousands and pushed the country to the brink of civil conflict.

A provocative postscript examines apartheid’s stubborn afterlife in the years since 1994, suggesting that the optimism and democratic vitality of the constitutional state hinge on South Africans avoiding simplistic views of the past that might lend themselves to demagoguery. For all its catastrophic and lingering effects, the book concludes, apartheid was disarmed, ultimately, by the society’s much longer history of inseparability.

10 Factory farming and animal liberation: the New Zealand experience

Author : Michael Morris
Genre : Engineering Books Professional & Technical Politics & Current Events
Price : Free
Release Date : 2012-06-27
Description : This book is about the rights of animals, specifically those farmed for the table. But it is also about human rights; namely our rights in a democracy to have our voices listened to and acted on by our democratically elected leaders.

The book starts with an introduction to animal welfare in New Zealand and other countries. It then summarises the science around animal welfare and the difficult question about how we can know what an animal is feeling. The next chapter touches on questions of value; of what is important to animals, and our ethical obligations around the ways animals should be treated. Public perceptions towards animal wellbeing and public demands for better welfare conditions are described and discussed. The effectiveness of the political and legal system in translating these demands into action is analysed.

The book then spells out the shocking way factory farmed hens, broiler chickens and pigs are treated in a supposedly enlightened western country, and compares this with animal welfare regulation and practice in other states. It also describes the author's personal experience of the endless lengths industry and government will go to deny, intimidate and bluster in their efforts to hide the truth, and profit as much as possible from animal misery.

Though much of the material on animal treatment is bleak, the book also aims to give a message of hope, by describing ways that angry, organised and active people have made a difference for animals. It spells out ways that readers can encourage change for the better, both through their own buying habits and through influencing their communities, neighbours and the wider society. The final chapters includes guidelines on ways to tell truth to power and be effective, and they outline the political and legislative changes required for a more compassionate society.

This book is about the ethics and politics of animal welfare in one small Western country. However, issues around exploitation of the vulnerable, suppression of truth and the power of determined individuals to change are universal. I am confident that the lessons from this book can be applied to many situations world wide.

The author has a PhD in zoology, and originally conducted ecological research on insects. His research interests have since shifted from straight science to the interface between science, ethics and society. He has been a scientific researcher, a university teacher and a government policy adviser. He is presently a board member of SAFE, New Zealand's largest animal rights organisation.

15 Scotland and the Caribbean, c.1740-1833

Author : Michael Morris
Genre : Europe Books History
Price : $57.99
Release Date : 2015-03-12
Description : This book participates in the modern recovery of the memory of the long-forgotten relationship between Scotland and the Caribbean. Drawing on theoretical paradigms of world literature and transnationalism, it argues that Caribbean slavery profoundly shaped Scotland’s economic, social and cultural development, and draws out the implications for current debates on Scotland’s national narratives of identity. Eighteenth- to nineteenth-century Scottish writers are re-examined in this new light. Morris explores the ways that discourses of "improvement" in both Scotland and the Caribbean are mediated by the modes of pastoral and georgic which struggle to explain and contain the labour conditions of agricultural labourers, both free and enslaved. The ambivalent relationship of Scottish writers, including Robert Burns, to questions around abolition allows fresh perspectives on the era. Furthermore, Morris considers the origins of a hybrid Scottish-Creole identity through two nineteenth-century figures - Robert Wedderburn and Mary Seacole. The final chapter moves forward to consider the implications for post-devolution (post-referendum) Scotland. Underpinning this investigation is the conviction that collective memory is a key feature which shapes behaviour and beliefs in the present; the recovery of the memory of slavery is performed here in the interests of social justice in the present.

16 Confronting Drought in Africa's Drylands

Author : Raffaello Cervigni & Michael Morris
Genre : Economics Books Business & Personal Finance
Price : $34.99
Release Date : 2016-05-09
Description : Drylands are at the core of Africa’s development challenge. Drylands make up about 43 percent of the region’s land surface, account for about 75 percent of the area used for agriculture, and are home to about 50 percent of the population, including a disproportionate share of the poor. Due to complex interactions among many factors, vulnerability in drylands is high and rising, jeopardizing the long-term livelihood prospects for hundreds of millions of people. Climate change, which is expected to increase the frequency and severity of extreme weather events, will exacerbate this challenge. African governments and their partners in the international development community stand ready to tackle the challenges confronting drylands, but important questions remain unanswered about how the task should be undertaken. Do dryland environments contain enough resources to generate the food, jobs, and income needed to support sustainable livelihoods for a fast growing population? If not, can injections of external resources make up the deficit? Or is the carrying capacity of drylands so limited that outmigration should be encouraged? Based on analysis of current and projected future drivers of vulnerability and resilience, the report uses an original modeling framework to identify promising interventions, quantify their likely costs and benefits, and describe the policy trade-offs that will need to be addressed. By 2030, economic growth leading to structural change will allow some of the people living in drylands to transition to non-agriculture based livelihood strategies, reducing their vulnerability. Many others will continue to rely on livestock keeping and crop farming. For the latter group, a number of “best bet†? interventions have the potential to make a significant difference in reducing vulnerability and increasing resilience. This report evaluates the opportunities and challenges associated with these interventions, and it draws a number of conclusions that have important implications for policy making.

17 Knowledge and Ideology

Author : Michael Morris
Genre : Philosophy Books Nonfiction
Price : $82.99
Release Date : 2016-11-09
Description : Ideology critique generally seeks to undermine selected theories and beliefs by demonstrating their partisan origins and their insidious social functions. This approach rightly reveals the socially implicated nature of much purported knowledge, but also brackets or bypasses its cognitive properties. In contrast, Michael Morris argues that it is possible to integrate the social and epistemic dimensions of belief in a way that preserves the cognitive and adjudicatory capacities of reason, while acknowledging that reason itself is inevitably social, historical, and interested. Drawing upon insights from Hegel, Lukács, Mannheim, and Habermas, he interprets and reconstructs Marx's critique of ideology as a positive theory of knowledge, one that reconciles the inherently interested and inextricably situated nature of thought with more traditional conceptions of rational adjudication, normativity, and truth. His wide-ranging examination of the social and epistemic dimensions of ideology will interest readers in political philosophy and political theory.
